Iron Cross is one of the betting systems with longest history. It has managed to become a part of the most-used Craps betting strategies because of the fact that it is considered a system that actually “wins most of the time”. The Iron Cross system is also among the most popular ones because it is not a complex betting strategy. Iron Cross Iron Cross is played with one Field Bet and three place numbers on the 5, 6, 8. Each bet is the table minimum, $5 for example. Place Bets on the 6 and 8 would be $6 in this case, for a total of $22.

Like all gamblers, craps players are always on the lookout for a new system. The Iron Cross isn’t a progressive program like the Colonel’s craps system, but it does take advantage of the field wager, which covers the numbers 2, 3, 4, 9, 10, 11 and 12.

The Iron Cross is a strategy where the player bets on the pass line, after the come out roll, the player then adds a field bet and a place bet on the inside numbers (5, 6, 8, and 9). If the point is one of the inside numbers, then the player does not place that number. Craps is a table game that has been around for over a century. And if you want a safe and reasonably fool-proof betting system to use, the Iron Cross might be for you. The Iron Cross plan works a little like the Cover the Table bet in roulette. A wager is placed on almost every possible outcome other than the 7. As I have said hundreds of times, not only can betting systems not beat games like craps, they can’t even dent the house edge. I have a question about a series of bets in craps. The strategy is called the 'Iron Cross.' It involves a bet on the 5, 6, 8, and the field.

How the Iron Cross System Works

The Iron Cross is sometimes called the No Seven system, because the player covers all the possible numbers on the table except the dreaded 7. Most players bet the pass line and therefore root for a seven on the come-out roll, or the first roll with a new shooter. Rather than go against an entire table of players, the Iron Cross player usually waits until a pass-line number is established and then makes a wager in the field and also places the numbers 5, 6 and 8, to cover everything but 7. When you first try the Iron Cross, start with small wagers, but let’s assume you are playing at a $10 craps game so your field bet must be $10.

If you already know how to play craps, then you know the place bets are wagers on specific numbers, and you know the wager on the number 5 will be $10 and the wager on 6 and 8 will be $12 each. You should get your four wagers down before the next roll of the dice. Tell your inside dealer you want the 5, 6 and 8 for $34 total, then place the $10 bet in the field yourself. By doing this you have covered every number, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12, except 7. You’ll win on every roll now except the 7, which will cost you your entire $44 in bets.

There are a total of 36 ways that the dice can total a number on the craps table. Seven is the easiest number to make, and can roll in six ways (1-6, 6-1, 5-2, 2-5, 4-2, 2-4). There are 30 ways another number can roll, so the odds that you will see a winning total on the next roll are 30 to 6, or 30 out of 36. However, you also get an extra payoff when the dice total 2 or 12, since most craps games pay double on the 2 and triple on the 12 for any field bets.

However, regardless of how many times you’ll win, the house still holds the advantage. You can expect that edge to be 2.48 percent if the casino pays double on 2 and triple on 12 (or vice versa) for field wagers. The way your play works is fairly simple.

When you have your $44 in action and a field number rolls, you’ll be very happy, because you’ll get a full payoff on the field and your place bets will stay up and require no more attention. Your $10 wager in the field will win $10 on 3, 4, 9, 10, 11. When 2 rolls you’ll win $20 and when 12 rolls you’ll win $30. Take your payoff and leave your original $10 bet where it was.

The Iron Cross Betting Strategy, also called the Anything But 7 Strategy, is a strategy that combines a field bet with place bets to cover every number on the board except the seven.

In essence, it combines a Field Bet which covers the numbers 2, 3, 4, 9, 10, 11 and 12 with Place Bets on the 5, 6 and 8. You’ve then effectively covered 30 of the 36 outcomes of the dice.

For many who use this system, they believe they’ve flipped the odds from the casino to the player. In theory, that’s actually true, if you only look at one roll of the dice.

But this is a multi-roll bet and strategy, and while you’re collecting a small amount on every roll, you can lose big if a 7 shows early in the shooters rolls.

Let’s take a look at what this looks like on a $10 minimum table;

• After the Come Out
  • Place a $10 Field Bet
  • Place Bet the 5 for $10 and the 6 & 8 for $12 each
    • You now have $44 dollars invested on the table
  • Replace the $10 Field Bet anytime a 5, 6 or 8 rolls

• Possible outcomes on each roll
  • (2) or (12) is rolled
    • Win $20 – 2 times your Field Bet
      • Some casinos offer 3X on either the 2 or 12
  • (3), (4), (9), (10) or (11) is rolled
    • Win $10 – 1X of your Field Bet
  • (5), (6) or (8) is rolled
    • Win $14 on your Place Bet
    • Lose $10 on your Field Bet
  • (7) is rolled
    • Lose $44 dollars

For many players, this strategy offers a lot of fun and entertainment at the table because you’re ‘collecting’ on every roll of the dice, except for the 7 obviously.

But is the Iron Cross (Anything But 7) Strategy really worth using at the craps tables? Well let’s take a look.

Advantages

• You win on every roll of the dice except for the 7
• You cover 30 of the 36 possible outcomes of the dice
• Works great on ‘hot’ and many times on ‘warm’ tables
• $44 is a relatively small investment for a $10 table minimum

Disadvantages

• The estimated ‘house edge’ of this strategy is just under 4.0%
  • There are many other betting strategies with a lower casino advantage
• Net win of $4 on the 5, 6 and 8 (Place Bet wins $14, Field Bet loses $10)
  • The 5, 6 and 8 make up 14 of the 30 possible positive outcomes for the player
• On average, you need 5 to 6 rolls before a 7 to make up your investment.
  • Average collect on each positive roll is $7.87 requiring 5.59 rolls to break even.
• Does not work on ‘cold’ or ‘choppy’ tables

The Iron Cross (Anything But 7) Strategy can offer advantages depending on the trends at the table and there are a number of variations to this strategy as well.

Keep in mind, that no strategy can change the ‘house edge’ (casino advantage) in the long run. It’s up to you to determine the right times to use this strategy and when to not use it.
